How did it all start?

A little story about how the Sri Lanka Card project started

In 2005 after the Tsunami many camps were set up and orphanages to take in families who had been displaced or children who had lost their parents. A group of volunteers realized that life for the kids in the camps must be pretty boring, so they started running art and activity workshops. Some also taught sport, some sang, some juggled; each one found whatever skill they had and they brought it to share and entertain the displaced families and their children.

The volunteers started running these workshops not only for tsunami affected people but for children in deprived areas and orphanages also. What they soon realized is that, as a result of these fun activity workshops, they could raise money for the comunity for food supplies, clothes, medicine, and whatever else was needed. So they started colouring shapes and pictures that could then be made into seasonal greeting cards and sold them to the friends and families of the volunteers and also to local businesses.

100% of the proceeds from the sales went to benefit the children. They used the money to buy important supplies such as bed sheets, insect repellent systems, water purifiers, light bulbs, shoes, clothes, sports equipment and then spent the money they had left on taking the children to the local adventure park and zoo on Christmas day.

What we do

We run art and activity workshops in orphanages and poor schools and villages in Colombo and southern Sri Lanka.

Around Christmas time as part of the activity workshops, we colour and draw with the children Christmas themed shapes and patterns that can then be turned into greeting cards by the nimble hands of other hardworking volunteers, some of them parents or young adults in the community.

Thankyou to everybody outside the UK who has expressed an interest in this project! We realise that exchange rates being what they are, some users outside the UK may feel that the cards are prohibitively expensive to buy through our current shopping cart system. Therefore we ask that you place orders with us via email and let us know how many cards you would like and what you would like to donate.

We will send you a special link so that you can pay via credit/debit card or cheque in your own currency at a price that suits you.

Paying by Debit / Credit Card

Please email us via our FB profiles or at the address below stating how many cards you'd like. We will then send you a payment request email via paypal, which you can complete in the normal way.

You can also buy cards directly from this website via our shopping cart to the right of this page.

Delivery

Please get your orders in by December 1st to be guaranteed delivery before December 7th. (but you can place orders later if you don't mind them arriving later).
